Questions and Answers

How should I feel after an adjustment?

The chiropractic spinal adjustment is a very powerful procedure. At the moment that a misalignment is corrected, literally hundreds of bodily functions and activities are normalised as the body begins to renew and rebuild itself.

Some people may feel discomfort and/or pain after treatment. Fortunately, even those experiencing such reactions later enjoy the relief that accompanies adjustment after a short period of time. The cause of the reaction varies. The muscles are re-aligning the spine after the adjustment; often these muscles haven't worked properly for years and may be in a weak state. Now that the muscles are working again they may become sore.

Sometimes nerves that were impinged or subluxated for years are now "coming back to life" or becoming sensitive again. Old injury pains may be re-awakened in order for the healing of old injuries to begin again.

What causes the noise of an adjustment?

Many chiropractors use techniques that create the popping sound of a spinal release; gas (80% Carbon Dioxide) rushes in to fill a partial vacuum created when the joint surfaces are slightly separated. It is this displacement of joint fluid that is believed to be the cause of the cracking noise.

How long does a spinal adjustment take?

Usually just a few minutes. It all depends on the adjusting technique the chiropractor is using. Sometimes it takes a few visits for a new patient to get an initial adjustment.

Can a person who has had back surgery see a chiropractor?

Yes. Many people who have had various kinds of spinal surgery often discover a return of the same back problems months or even years later. These people can usually receive chiropractic care without undue worry. It is best to check with your chiropractor on a case-to-case basis.

Can chiropractic care help prevent back surgery?

In the majority of cases the answer is a resounding Yes.

Chiropractic adjustment has many benefits. You may expenence not only an improvement in the condition that led you to seek chiropractic care initially, but an overall improvement in the function of the nervous system and thereby an improvement in general health and well-being. You could feel better; better sleep pattern, an increased resistance to infection and an improved ability to cope with stress.

Finally, two attitudes that

chiropractic does not accept:

"Learn to live with it'"

"It's all in your mind"
